Raleigh, N.C. native Bernard Harris is adept at doing something
few people can pull off. He manages to make the bass guitar take
center stage in intricate jazz arrangements in a way that demonstrates
both the prominence and possible vulnerabilities of the instrument.
Though Harris now calls Nashville home and performs locally sometimes,
he is making more of a name for himself on the regional and national
levels, having performed extensively in Memphis, Atlanta and throughout
North Carolina. With a mix of gospel and R&B inflections, Harris's
canonically jazz offering attempts to pick up where Larry Graham
and The Brothers Johnson left off in the '70s, when they demonstrated
that a bass could lead a rhythm section.
Mellow and understated, with few bells and whistles, Basses Covered
Two: Favour is an exploration of what has been termed contemporary
jazz, but with less of the artificiality and technological wizardry
that often seems to eliminate any inkling of soul in this sub-genre.
However, if you don't like your flavor of jazz to take much risk-taking
and just want something to cool out to, this is for you.
